Melvin Guillard Interview
Here's a brief interview
conducted by Zewkey's Stoicho Gogov with
Melvin Guillard (33-6-3) as
he prepares for Joe Stevenson (31-7-0) at
UFN 9
SG: First I want
to thank you for doing this interview. What's your condition
currently? How serious is the hand injury you have?
MG: I’m in
incredible shape and ready for my next fight. The hand injury
was minor and already completely recovered.
SG: You are 3-1
in the UFC. How far from a title shot at 155 pounds do you think
you are?
MG: I feel I am very close. I was very happy with
my big wins against Rick Davis and Gabe Ruediger. I know there
are people inline before me, but I will continue to fight at the
top of my game and be ready for when my name is called.
SG: How many fights do you have left in your UFC
contract?
MG: I believe I still have a year and half left on
my current deal
SG: Who do you think will win a fight between
Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca? And who would you prefer to fight
for the championship belt?
MG: I’m ready to fight anyone. Sean is a monster
though and I think he would take it to Hermes. Sean’s only
professional losses were to the two best Welterweight fighters
in the world.
SG: When did you start wrestling?
MG: I started wrestling in high school with my
coach Warren Donnelly who is still my coach today!
SG: What's your weight at the moment? How much
do you usually cut before a fight?
MG: I am the most physically fit fighter
pound-for-pound in the UFC. I have less than 4% body fat at any
given time so weight is rarely an issue for me and I hardly ever
go over my fighting weight of 155.
SG: Who are you training with at the moment?
MG: I train with my coach Warren Donnelly, Pat
Berry and I plan to go to Big Bear and train with Team
Punishment to finish off camp!
SG: What would you like to improve in your
style? Do you plan concentrating on a specific part of the game?
MG: You can always improve every aspect of your
game and I work on them all. As for concentrating on a specific
part, I will tailor that to my next opponent. However, I can go
to the mat with the best of them and throw as well.
SG: Do you lift weights? Do you believe in the
positive effect of working with maximum weights as a MMA
fighter?
MG: I lift weights, but other than just power, you
need the cardio to successfully face any fighter. I don’t care
how strong you are, if there isn't any gas in the tank, you
can't fight.
SG: What was it like living in TUF 2 house?
Would you share some interesting details that were not shown on
the TV?
MG: It was a great experience and something I will
never forget. But one thing everyone should know was that I was
definitely the prettiest.
SG: Do you agree that the Japan is the place for
the best LW fighters to showcase their skills? What do you think
of the Japanese superstars Takanori Gomi and Kid Yamamoto?
MG: As far as competition, its hard to beat the
fighters in Japan, but as for showcasing those skills, they
don’t get the exposure that American athletes get. Takanori and
Kid Yamamoto could be worldwide superstars with the right
organization. The UFC is my home and the best organization in
the world!
SG: Why do you think fans either hate you or
love you?
MG: I’m a character, much like Terrell Owens. You can't
deny my talent, but I’m not going to worry about my image when
it comes to telling it like it is.
SG: What are your thoughts on your upcoming
fight with Joe Stevenson? Could you analyze your chances to win?
MG:
I’m ready for anyone. Joe has been very impressive but
he did not deserve to win TUF 2. He won the fight by laying and
praying and squeaked out a decision! Then he went and got tooled
by Josh Neer! It will be a good fight because Stevenson has
skills but he is going to eat a ton of leather! That I can
promise you! I hope Joe is prepared for the strongest, fastest
lightweight around because come April 5th, he is going to get a
full taste of what I can do!
SG: Anyone
you want to thank?
MG: I couldn’t and wouldn’t do any of this without
the support of my family. I also want to thank God for giving me
this talent and keeping me at the top of my game.
Thanks to Melvin Guillard
