Miguel Torres began
training martial arts at the age of 7. Miguel fell in love with martial
arts,
the training was great and he loved the combat and
competition. Torres' father had to take him out of it when he
was 9 because they couldn't afford it. Miguel started kickboxing
at 14 and paid for it with his own money he made
doing landscaping work. While kickboxing was
great
for his standup, Torres struggled when he fought with his friends who
were wrestlers. That changed though when he was
18,
after a good friend introduced him to a teacher of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Miguel Torres went
to Purdue University and graduated with a degree in Marketing. While
Torres was at
Purdue he was paying his tuition with purses he won from
fights. Miguel made sure that he was
fighting 4-5 times a semester to keep up with his college bills. After
graduation,
Torres realized how much he was earning while training/fighting
and he decided to make fighting his career.
Miguel Torres record
is listed at 34-1, although Torres has his record at 46-1 on his Torres
martial
arts website. He also holds a long list of
titles and ranks: WEC Bantamweight Champion, Total Fight Challenge, Iron
Heart Crown, Sooto Americas 132-pound, Extreme Shootfighting, Superbrawl
Champion and his most recent Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Carlson
Gracie Jr. Torres is also listed on Sherdog.com as the #7 pound for pound
mixed martial artist in the world.
