Betting units question?

Postby Danksta » Sat Jun 19, 2010 7:00 am

What do people mean when they bet units? Like 1 unit on hamill over jardine? Is that a type of betting strategy?

alot of people use units as measuring sticks for how much they bet. a unit can be whatever you determine it to be, alot of people use $100 as a unit but all a unit is, is an amount they use without saying how much they bet. you can tell alot by someone if they risk 8 units they are pretty confident in that person

some people use it as the foundation for their betting. they usually use a certain % of betting bankroll, etc.

it's a way to keep yourself in check, too. less "action" or "stab" bets - if it's worth betting, bet your normal amount. otherwise it isn't really worth it. also, it keeps you from going overboard. it's also easier to track your successes/failures.

i'm still not sure what the best thing for me is. i used to do TONS of parlays, TONS of big, medium, little bets.. but no real structure to them. now, if my picks are really good, it can pay better (the parlays etc) than units/etc.. but since i've switched over to units (and in particular for me, less fights that i bet on) -- it's been working pretty well.

i established $50 as my "unit" ($50 risk if dog, $50 to win if favorite) - and i rarely do less than 1 unit. certain fights i'll go as high as 4 or more units. i'm just doing it to try to stay grounded.
